BASIC INFORMATION

TREATMENT  PERIOD

The in-patient programme will run over a period of 8 weeks, while the the aftercare is over a period of 6 months.

BACKGROUND

The Western Cape Youth Rehabilitation Centre was launched on 16 June 2010 by Premier Helen Zille, and will operate from 1 September 2010. The centre is managed by Lukhanyo Clinic, who entered into a Public Private Partnership with the Department of Social Development.

TARGET GROUP

The centre accommodates 20 girls and 20 boys between the ages of 13-18 years who are substance dependent.

TREATMENT  PERIOD

The in-patient programme will run over a period of 8 weeks, while the the aftercare is over a period of 6 months.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Referral agents must contact the Centre to ascertain available places in the programme.

2. Completed referral reports must be submitted to the Centre (Formats for referral reports are available on request.)

3. The Centre will confirm admission date with the referral agent.

FEES

The treatment programme is sponsored by the Department of Social Development.  However, families will be required to deposit R20 on admission for damage / replacement of keys. This will be refunded on discharge.  Families may deposit money for luxuries which will be bought on the patient's behalf.

ADMISSION  CRITERIA

  • Voluntary admissions (Primary health facilities or social worker assessments)
  • Court diversions (non-violent charges, first offenders
  • Youth between the ages of 13-18 years
  • Male and female
  • Physiological dependence on licit and illicit substances
  • Physiological/somatic evidence of long-term use/abuse
  • Evidence of co-morbid drug, physical and psychiatric conditions

EXCLUSION  CRITERIA

  • Acute intoxication with licit and illicit substances
  • Florid psychosis requiring specialist care (security and containment)
  • Court referrals with charges of violence-related crimes
  • Self-destructive personalities
  • Mental retardation
  • Actively suicidal youth
  • Ad-hoc walk-ins
